‘The Altered Cityscape (part 2)’

July – November 2012

The CBD of Christchurch has undergone vast change since the series of earthquakes that first began on September 4, 2010. This series focuses on the cleared areas of land amongst the remaining buildings in and near the red-zone cordon. Reflecting on central Christchurch in its current state, these inner-city scenes are devoid of people and shot in the cool, detached aesthetic of deadpan photography.

This time can be seen as a pause between the coming down and going up of buildings on these sites and the human echo of evacuation, and eventually, repopulation. I focus on this pause as an opportunity for my audience to imagine ‘what once was’ and ‘what could be’ some day in the city of Christchurch.
